For many years, Wolof women in Senegal crafted their beautiful baskets from a local grass called njodax and strips of palm fiber. About 20 years ago, someone introduced colorful strips of plastic from a Dakar mat factory, and the women gladly embraced the opportunity to update their traditional craft with this new material.
